5 things about the engagement and wedding ring you may want to know

There are many customs regarding the wedding ring and engagement ring that many of us are confused about. Here are some points to help you clarify any doubts or questions you may have.

  1. An engagement is a promise couples give to marry each other in a near future. Therefore an engagement ring is not necessary, the ring is only a token of that promise. Apparently, this custom of giving a ring as a token of an agreement dates back to the Greek times. The token then doesn't have to be a ring. In fact you can skip this ring exchange 'thing' if you want to.

  2. The ladies may hate this but an engagement ring does not have to bear a diamond. Of course, if you can afford it (or he can afford it) by all means please buy one with a diamond.

  3. No, you do not have to wear your wedding ring all the time. Some people prefer to wear it on dressy occasions only while others take it off during work especially those that find the ring comes in the way or is at danger of catching things. There are also times when a wedding ring wouldn't fit like when a woman is pregnant and her fingers swell. Don't worry; people will know he or she is married by his/her mentions of "my wife" or "my husband". No, taking off the wedding ring does not invalidate the marriage.

  4. Your rings do not have to match although nowadays the rings are made so wonderfully that they are matching, complements each other or are in different sizes that one can fit him and the other can fit her. However, most will prefer that they are the same.

  5. Depending on your custom and religion rings may not be required at all during wedding. You need to consult your religious leaders since religious tradition varies.
