DIY Nails (cont.)
Step 1
Remove old polish with nail polish remover.
Step 2
Use clippers to shape nails. The ideal nail shape is 'squoval' (square-oval) where nails
are square in the middle and rounded at the edges. Squoval nails provide more side support
and are resistant to breaking. File nails starting at one edge and move across the top in
one motion. Never file nails back and forth - it can weaken nails.
Step 3
Soak nails in a bowl of warm water mixed with a lemon juice (about 3 tablespoons) for at
least five minutes.
Step 4
Dry hands and feet, then soften cuticles with cuticle cream. Massage cream into fingers
and toes for five minutes. Use a cuticle stick to push back your cuticles. Do not cut your
cuticles - it may lead to infection and nasty looking nails.

Some people like adding sugar to the cream in a 2-to-1
ratio, massaging into fingers and toes (for five minutes) to exfoliate dead cells.
Step 5
Wash hands and feet again. Wipe nails with a nail polish remover to rub off any residue.
This also ensures the basecoat and nail polish stays on longer.
Step 6
Apply a basecoat to each nail and let it dry thoroughly for at least two minutes. Basecoat
prevents discolouration and helps hold nail polish. Use a strengthening base coat if your
nails are brittle.
Step 7
Apply two coats of your favourite colour, starting with one stroke on each side, and then
one stroke down the middle. Finally, apply one layer of top coat to prevent chipping.
And voila! You are ready to flaunt your gorgeous nails.
