Marriage Registration for Non-Muslims: Things You Need To Know and Do

The process of registering a marriage in Malaysia is actually quite simple. There are basically two stages involved in this process that is, the submission of application stage and the registration of marriage stage. There are approximately 16 main marriage registration centers in Malaysia that have been listed for your reference.

Stage 1 - Submission of Application

The place of registration is essentially predetermined by the home address stated in your identification card. If your identity card address is in Ampang, then your place of registration shall be in Selangor. Check with your local registration office if unsure.

Once you have determined the place of registration, you and your spouse must present yourselves at the marriage registration council. You do not have to bring any witnesses at this juncture. However, you need to bring the following documents:-

  1. Original and photocopy of identification card or passport
  2. One passport size color photograph (instant photograph is not allowed)

Obtain the JPN.KC01 form from the application counter. You'll be advised on how to fill in the forms.

Proceed to take a number and wait until your number is called.

When called, proceed to the application counter. Hand in all the necessary documents and ensure that you get a letter of appointment and receipt for payment of registration (RM30).

The registration ceremony will normally be held 21 days after the date of submission of application. During this period, your photographs will be exhibited in the office of the council to allow the public to object to the marriage. You can select the date of registration (any day except Sundays and public holidays), but make sure it does not exceed more than 6 months from the date of submission.

Day of registration

On the actual day of registration, please bring two witnesses (one for you and and one for your spouse) to witness the registration ceremony, with . Also ensure that you and your spouse and witness bring the original identification card. Don't forget to bring along the letter of appointment given to you during the submission of application.

Dress code
  • The groom must be clean and tidy. Must be in long sleeves shirt with tie or batik shirt.
  • Strictly no jeans, shorts, t-shirt or sandals.
  • The bride must be presentable i.e. tidy and clean and must not be too revealing in dressing.
  • Both bride and groom are encouraged to wear their wedding gown and suit (not compulsory).
  • The couples are also allowed to wear their respective traditional costume i.e. sari, cheong sam, etc.

You can go to the marriage registration council between 8 to 11am on the fixed date. The witnesses must be 21 years old and above. When you are at the council, please take a number and wait to be called.

When you are called to the counter, you are required to sign on the marriage registration draft and receive their receipt for payment made. After that proceed to the ceremonial room. Make sure that you and your witnesses sign on the marriage register, and both of you get a copy of the marriage registration certificate each.

After that, you are pronounced as man and wife. You are given 15 minutes to use the ceremonial room for photography session with your family, relatives and friends.

Congratulations!!!
