It is difficult to assemble
into words… but Scary Movie truly attempts to stand on a
league of its own. However, 'Scary' as its name suggests,
couldn't be further from the truth. This is hard-core comedy
at the helm of director Keenan Ivory Wayans. With brothers
Shawn and Marlon Wayans in the cast, this is truly a Wayans
family outing.
But if the Wayans brothers
aren't exactly sweet on your palette, the large and varied
core cast really dilute the Wayans factor. The heroine Cindy
(Anna Faris) has her clique of friends not short of Buffy
(Shannon Elizabeth), Brenda (Regina Hall), Bobby (Jon Abrahams),
Greg (Lochlyn Munro), Shorty (Marlon Wayans), Ray (Shawn
Wayans) and Drew (Carmen Electra).
Someone is killing off high
school kids and nobody knows who. All anyone knows is that the
killer wears a hood, a mask and seems to know the dark secrets
behind Cindy and her motley crew.
If this simple plot sounds
familiar, it's because it's an exact mirror-copy of
"Scream," the horror thriller released a few years
ago. "Scary Movie" is not only a spoof of
"Scream," it examines the lighter side of movies
like "The Sixth Sense," "The Matrix,"
"I Know What You Did Last Summer," and "The
Blair Witch Project" as well as a myriad of others if you
can "catch and associate," them. It is thus
pointless to even try to give the plot, or a short synopsis of
"Scary Movie" away. It is, essentially, a
coalescence of various small scenes, cuts and takes made funny
to fit in the larger plot around these High-School kids.
As I said from the very start,
it is difficult to describe this genre of comedy in words. But
if I do, it would certainly include words like 'gleeful',
'teen culture', 'raunchy' and absolutely 'hilarious'. |
