For those of you who have been looking for depth, inspiration,
intelligence and of course passion in a movie, then search no
more! 'Passion' is a movie that will instigate all those
feelings and much more.
Passion is based on the life of
Percy Grainger (Richard Roxburgh), a genius pianist, who's
renowned for his virtuoso playing of great works. From
childhood, his mother Rose has guided him and built his career
as a pianist. She loves him truly and believes him to be a
genius. Therefore she feels obligated or rather her duty as a
mother of a genius, to see to it that his full talents are
realized.
Percy, however, is a man of
strong passions. Drawn to the arts, he abhors the restrictions
imposed by society. Therefore one of his favourite joys is
composing. He draws inspiration from the simplest things such
as birds chirping to a group of drunken men singing out of
tune in a shanty pub. It is really quite remarkable watching
the progression of his life as it makes you think of your own!
Throughout the movie, he
questions the meaning of nobility and what is considered to be
right and acceptable. Should one go through life worrying
about every rule imposed by society? Or to be free to practice
whatever one believes and be accepted for it?
Being a man of strong passions,
women are a major part of his life. The relationship between
Rose and him drew lots of speculation and is construed by
society to be unnatural. However, women are drawn to his
charming disposition and promises.
He starts to notice his best
friend's fiancée, and sets out to charm her. However she
manages to resist and instead introduces him to her friend
Karen Holten, played by Emily Woolf. His mother takes a liking
to Karen, and takes Karen into her home under the pretense of
learning piano. The story starts to unfold now, focusing on
the relationship between Percy, Emily and his mother.
While under Percy's tutorage,
Karen starts to open her mind and learns to understand Percy
and his unique ways. Percy sees great talent in Karen's
playing but sees that she lacks true understanding of music
and tries to free her mind.
Rose is relieved that Karen has
managed to captivate Percy and strongly hopes that she will
marry him. Suffering from syphilis, her health as well as her
mental state of mind slowly deteriorates. Her main hope is
that Karen will restrain Percy's darker passions, i.e.
masochism.
However Karen is obsessed with
Percy and encourages him in whatever makes him happy. She
encourages his composing and playing his own music at
recitals. Soon she gets involved with Percy's darker passions.
Trouble begins when Rose finds out. Rose (Barbara Hershey), is
portrayed very well here as a mother who is tries to be strong
but is emotionally week and needy.
Passion is an Australian award
winning film and it received the Australian Cinematographers
Society award. It certainly is a well-directed film that will
draw out the passion in any viewer!
