To tell you the truth, I was
quite skeptical when I was told about this movie. My first
thought was "Another Highlander sequel?" Admittedly
the original Highlander was good. It was ground-breaking in
fact, with its original story and sword fighting. However, the
subsequent sequels were badly done. So you understand my
unease about this movie.
As 'Highlander : Endgame'
unfolds, it tells the story about an extremely powerful
immortal who must be stopped lest he become the single most
powerful being on Earth. In his quest for power, this immortal
racks up the kills by slaughtering any other immortal he can
find. For the uninitiated, immortals in the movie get more
powerful by a process called "Quickening" where one
immortal absorbs the strength of another. Of course to do so,
you must kill the other bloke. The only way to kill another
immortal is to behead him/her. So expect plenty of
decapitations.
Mind you, the story is not
unlike the first Highlander movie, just with some added twists
to the plot. The interesting about this movie is that it has
no connection whatsoever with the 2nd and 3rd Highlander
movies. It only seems to be connected to the original
Highlander movie. Another point of interest would be that this
movie combines the stories of the Highlander movie and the
TV-series. So we get to see Connor (Christopher Lambert) and
Duncan (Adrian Paul) working together as a team. So there is a
little originality with the storyline here.
Overall, the movie wasn't bad,
but neither is it good. It has the usual trimmings such as
overwhelmingly powerful bad guy, love interests, collection of
bad guy's cronies…the usual set up of any "Good versus
Evil" movie. However, the packaging of it is rather
mediocre. Oh, there are many sword-fighting scenes, though I
find some of them are a little lacking in "Wow"
factor.
My parting thoughts would be to
watch this movie if you are a die-hard fan. Otherwise, my
advice would be to watch the first Highlander movie again.
It's definitely more fulfilling. By the way, there was
unexpected twist towards the end that quite surprised me. I'll
leave to you to find out for yourself what it is.
