Fans of Cantonese 'gambling movies' will welcome this flick.
Think Chow Yun Fatt in 'God Of Gamblers' and you get the
picture. However, 'Conman In Tokyo' offers more than the
normal fare of the hero's rise to gambling fame and the
expected climatic 'winner takes all' finale. It's rather
difficult to catagorise this movie as it is a mix of action,
drama, romance and comedy, with loads of flying cards.
Jersey, the reining Gambling
King of Hong Kong, is played by Cheung Ka Fai who fits into
the role perfectly. Jersey is a vivacious fellow who just
simply enjoys having fun and showing off his skills in betting
and gambling on just about every game or sport you can think
of, from bowling, football, basketball to snooker and poker.
Cheung Ka Fai really looks like he's having a ball in this
movie as his character is simply funny, has a motor mouth and
is so opinionated that he must have his say on everything and
anything.
Jersey's girlfriend Nancy is
played by Christy Chung, whom many will recognise from the
full-page ads in the newspapers as the spokeswoman for a
certain body-slimming company. She and Cheung Ka Fai
complement each other well. Though her role is comparatively
small, it is nonetheless cast in a better light than merely
being the star's girlfriend and be a pretty accessory hanging
on him. Nancy is a confident, vulgar-mouthed woman who gets
'steamed' watching her boyfriend kick the asses of the bad
guys.
While on a shopping holiday in
Japan, Jersey gallantly went to the rescue of a restaurant
owner who was attacked by the Yakuza, the Japanese Mafia.
Jersey recognised the owner to be Cool (played by Koo Tin Lok),
his idol, and the one and only true Gambling King who
disappeared a few years ago. Known for his skill of flying
cards, Cool could flip cards through the air to maim or kill.
There are lots of instances of flying cards that it reminded
me of 'Crouching
Tiger, Hidden Dragon' when Chow Yuen Fatt warded of flying
poison needles with his sword.
Koo Tin Lok looks absolutely
dashing here. His character Cool is a man tormented by his
love for his former girlfriend, Karen, who is now the wife of
his former partner, Kwong. However, she is an invalid after
being hit by a bullet that was meant for Cool. Tormented by
his love and guilt, Cool left his former life and lives only
to catch glimpses of Karen by peeping through the trees. With
Jersey's good intentioned busybody intervention, Cool is
dragged back into the world he vowed to leave and to
eventually face his nemesis.
Our 'movie guardians' sure had
a jolly time with the scissors as far as vulgar language was
concerned. It was rather irritating and distracting to watch
the movie with the flow interrupted more than just a few times
and thus, making the movie look jerky. However, even with the
occasional 'cutting', I enjoyed the movie and had a good share
of laughs, courtesy of Cheung Ka Fai. Though only cast as the
hero's sidekick throughout his career, this actor has a lot of
potential and just has to bid his time to be offered the main
part in a movie. 'Conman In Tokyo' has its appeal with comedy,
romance and action; all in one. A recommended watch.
