When I first saw the preview for "Bats", all you could
see were black things flapping around and the scenes were dark. I
thought it was going to be one of those films where you could see
your image on television because of the many black screen moments!
However, "Bats" turned
out to be pretty good. The bats or their scientific name "chiroptera"
were shown with clarity. They were as described in the movie as
ugly little creatures but I thought they were pretty adorable with
their gnarly faces and arrogant looks!
The story begins when two bats
infected with a genetic virus escape from a military lab. Soon
mutilated carcasses of animals are found. Everything is kept
hushed until human bodies start turning up. Dr.Sheila Casper (Dina
Meyer), a zoologist who studies bats, is called in to locate the
bat roost somewhere in a small western town in Texas. The
tactically intelligent bats however do put up quite the
resistance, and that spices up the movie. The efforts to capture
the bats prove to be difficult and dangerous.
The town is evacuated after a
midnight massacre involving thousands of bats. However Dr.Sheila,
her assistant Jimmy (Leon), the town sheriff Emmett Kismey (Lou
Diamond Phillips) and genetic scientist Dr. Alexander McCabe (Bob
Gunton) volunteer to stay behind, to capture and destroy the bats.
Holding fort in the towns abandoned school, they study the flight
patterns of the bats in order to locate the roost. Earlier
attempts to tag a bat proved futile, when it was killed by the two
genetically altered bats. Pretty smart move by the bats! The
graphics for the bloody bat attacks are excellent and if thriller
and suspense movies are your cup of tea, then "Bats" is
a must see.
The movie tries to be a little
comedic with the role of the bat assistant Jimmy, always equipped
with something witty to say. However he lacks conviction. My
favourite scene would be the entrance to the bat roost..! Dr.
Sheila and town sheriff, Emmet Kismey have to enter the bat roost
in order to switch on a freezer unit. Cooling down the bat roost
would cause the bats to hibernate and later on freeze to death.
Their journey to the bat roost lands them neck deep in none other
than guano! . Overall I say this is good movie to watch, there are
some good scenes to look out for.
