All TIme Record for Merdeka 2000!

This Thursday, 31st August not only marked the 43rd Merdeka for the cinema industry. It marked a record opening of seven movies: 'The Tigger Movie', 'The Road to Eldorado', 'The Cell', 'The Hurricane', 'The Road Home', 'Christmas In August' and the highly rated 'Leftenan Adnan'.

The new offerings span a wide choice of varied tastes, from cartoons such as 'The Tigger Movie' and 'The Road To Eldorado' to the spine chillers and thrillers of 'The Cell' and 'The Hurricane'. Other openings were Chinese director Zhang Yi-Mou's 'The Road Home' and the acclaimed Korean movie, 'Christmas in August'. For patriotic Malaysians, the aptly timed opening of 'Leftenan Adnan' was more than welcomed.

'The Tigger Movie' is a spin-off of one of Britain's most successful cartoon series, 'Winnie the Pooh', starring 'Tigger' the bouncy tiger. The Road to Eldorado' is a modern day search (by two conmen) for a city of gold, known only as 'El Dorado', in the 'Lost Cities' vein but for the first time in colourful animation.

'The Cell' is a dark thriller guaranteed not to cheer you up for any festive moods. It is a journey of revelation into a psycho killer's mind. 'The Hurricane', however is of a dramatic note. Rubin "Hurricane," a contender for the Middle Weight boxing title, is wrongly arrested for murders he didn't commit and a legal and moral battle ensues.

'The Road Home' is a love story narrated by a son in memory of his father's passing, while 'Christmas in August' is a sad Korean story of two people who, because of a terminal illness, do not have much time left on earth.

The star of the pack is undoubtedly Malaysia's very own Leftenan Adnan. Based on a true story, this movie is about none other than Leftenan Adnan who, during World War Two against the Japanese, showed bravery beyond the call of duty.

With most Cineplex's in the country having only 7 screens or fewer, this scale of opening is in the least, Overwhelming! It probably has never been done before and most likely will not be bettered in the near future. Malaysia Boleh!
