An Interview
With Erra Fazira
by Thomas Huong

Kuala Lumpur, August 18, 2000 (Friday) - At a press conference for
'Soal Hati', the new movie starring Erra Fazira and Afdlin Shauki, we
managed to talk to former Miss Malaysia and singer/actress Erra Fazira.
This is her first film by director Othman Hafsham as all her previous
films were by director Yusuf Haslam. She said, "Initially, I felt
quite nervous working with a new director. But director Othman Hafsham
was very professional and everybody was so experienced." The
entire movie took 42 days to shoot and the soundtrack will feature 4
new songs ('Soal Hati', 'Kerana', 'Romeo', 'Hadirmu') from her.
Also, she'll have a new album out next year. Erra commented,
"Currently, we already have 3 or 4 songs for the album." She
added, "Normally, I only do about 1 movie per year because this
way, I would also have time to concentrate on my music." About 'Soal
Hati', she feels that the movie's theme is about a woman's strong
spirit and character. Plus, she actually trained as a Metrojaya
salesgirl to get the feel of her role in 'Soal Hati'!!
On her future in showbiz, she said, "Well, currently I'm
trying to come up with movie scripts. And I'm learned so much about
movie-making from everybody I worked with. So, after my tenth film, I
would probably give producing or directing movies a try." She
would also like to manage her own music label and produce albums for
new artistes.
As for future movie roles, she would love to do police action roles
like the ones another successful Malaysian actress, Michelle Yeoh (Crouching
Tiger, Hidden Dragon), have had. However, she acknowledged,
"Nobody would believe me in those roles. Saya muka lembutlah (My
face is too soft)." Also, she admitted she would have to improve
on her command of English before she can do English movies.
She also hates all the media speculation about her personal
relationships. Erra moaned, "Let me find my own life partner lah.
Don't lah pair me with this guy or that guy." Negative media
gossip also hurts her sometimes. "Still, with the support of my
family and friends, I've learned to ignore bad press", she said.
Among the 8 movies she did, her favourite is 'Pasrah' with 'Soal
Hati' coming in second. She also loved her role as an old woman in 'Soal
Hati'. "I had to wear lots of makeup and it was fun", she
smiled impishly. And afterwards, she graciously agreed for another
photo-taking session despite having had one earlier. She's definitely
the most approachable, friendliest and beautiful celebrity I've ever
interviewed!!
