Topsy-Turvy (eng)
Leigh's
high-minded telling of the Gilbert & Sullivan story is a
thorough, highly ambitious effort. Concentrating mainly on the
conception and production of the pair's "The Mikado"
(1885), Leigh has researched this period in English history
exhaustively, from the language to the costumes to the
production numbers. Both Broadbent (as the negative-minded
Gilbert) and Corduner (as the "genius" Sullivan)
deliver impassioned, entirely believable performances, as do
the supporting players (Spall, McKidd, Manville). About as
different as any of Leigh's previous brutally realistic,
modern day examinations ("Naked, Secrets and Lies"),
his obvious affection for the work of Gilbert & Sullivan
shines through in every frame
Starring: Jim Broadbent , Allan Corduner , Lesley Manville ,
