Long time comic fans and avid X-Men followers must have that
lingering question of how this 'Larger than life,' epic is going
to be brought onto your local silverscreen… and you'd be right
to wonder. X-Men is not just an on-going, evolving epic tale of a
troupe of men & women with super powers who started under the
guidance of Professor Xavier. It is not just how large humanity
is, or isn't in an ever-changing, evolving world. It is not just
the immensity of the special effects required. It is not just
finding the right people to fill the right shoes. It is all of the
above.
As if that were not enough, the
experience had to be all enthralling and mouthwatering for the
general public who know much less about the X-Men than what's on
the other side of Pluto, while holding on to the essence of the
original comics.
The opening very smoothly leads the
audience through the relevant ages which explain Magneto's (Ian
McKellan) hatred for humankind and his resulting formation of the
'The Brotherhood of Mutants' which only agenda is to exterminate
men like mice. We are also introduced to the X-Men's most
charismatic, ambivalent and pertinacious creature, Wolverine (Hugh
Jackman), and the young Rogue (Anna Paquin), who form a bond which
very quickly becomes key in the plot of this movie.
When it becomes apparent what
Magneto and his mutant crew is up to, the pace suddenly changes
and a myriad of things start to happen all together. The mutant's
powers come into full display and melee combatants maneuver with
the most uncanny physics, defying gravity, shape and even the
weather!
Among the other characters worthy
of a mention are Storm (Halle Berry) who controls the power of
weather: wind, ice and lightning among those observed. Mystique
(Rebecca Romijn-Stamos) is a shape changer, able to transform to
anyone she wants. Her skintight blue suit has been and still is
the subject of media and special effects talk. Cyclops (James
Marsden) blasts a stream of deadly energy from his eyes while Toad
(Ray Park) is able to jump great heights and distances as well as
use his long tongue for useful purposes. (Ray Park was Darth Maul
in Star Wars' Episode I)
Wolverine and Sabretooth, two
mutants with extremely fast healing powers had, some time in the
past, been experimented on to enhance their skeletal structure and
strength. Wolverine had razor claws installed in both arms.
It may be immediately obvious that
the overall plot is simple and stereotypic. There are good guys
and there are bad guys. They clash and after a long… uncertain
and arduous battle, the good guys win against all odds. Oops! Is
that giving away too much? Certainly not! In fact what I've given
away is practically what you've seen in your last twenty movies or
so. The same plot, the same sides, the same victors. So, I have no
choice but to admit this, "The basic plot is gonna be very
much the same ol'… but be prepared for some real eye
candy!" After all, there are many sub-plots and turnarounds
as the story evolves and progresses."
X-Men fans will appreciate the way
the story unfolds in a way that adheres to the classic comics. You
might even find out a thing or two! But what about the immense
special effects of the X-Men powers? Yes. I think Brian Singer
really did justice there. You won't be disappointed. The quick
morphing of Mystique's appearance from person to person is just
stunning, not to mention her agility, nimbleness and not to
forget, HOT body! Toad, surprisingly isn't the quiet, subdued
creature I expected him to be. You have to watch to fully realize
the slick fighting routines. All I'll say about Storm
is…Electrifying! And of course Wolverine is the star over and
over with his slick "SNICKT!" razors jamming out of his
knuckles!
I almost forget… Magneto, nemesis
and old friend of Charles Xavier wields the power to control
anything metal. In this day and age, that's a lot of control for a
frail, old man to swallow. Not that Magneto doesn't do a good job
of it. It's just that the good guys penultimately have to win!
Some movies leave you with a thirst
for more. X-Men? It left my throat parched dry! By the way… so
much remains unexplained. Wolverine goes back to hills to find his
past and Magneto… well, he's down but not out.
