Spectacular!
There is only one word I can say about Titan AE. A mind-blowing adventure through space
and graphics so real, it's unbelievable.
Sounds too good to be true? Well, it
is. According to a survey, only a mere 12% of the audience who watch and enjoy animated
movies are in fact children. That's right, adults make up the remaining. Tapping into this
ready market, 20th Century Fox is getting ready to blow us away with Titan AE, and I must
add that they have done a mighty good job.
It is the year 3028, and Earth is
under attack by the evil Drej aliens. Earth is destroyed in one final catastrophic
explosion, but a brave scientist escaped with the Titan, the most advanced spaceship in
the galaxy. The humans who fled Earth are now refugees, becoming second-class citizens in
a hostile universe.
15 years after Earth's destruction,
the scientist's son Cale is now a young man and a loner. Having to grow up on a third rate
asteroid surrounded by aliens, he has had to grow up fast and cares only for himself. He
isn't the least bothered that the human race is a minority in the universe. But that's all
about to change.
Sought out by the Valkyrie's
(think Han Solo's Millennium Falcon) Captain Korso, his beautiful kick-butt pilot
Akima and a ragtag crew of assorted aliens, Cale discovers that the ring which his father
gave him as a child activates a map to the hidden location of the Titan ship; a map
imprinted in Cale's hand. The Titan, created by Cale's father, is indeed humanity's last
hope for it holds the key to the propagation and salvation of the human race. Cale must
learn to put others before himself as he becomes a hero, albeit a reluctant one.
The Drejs too are after the map,
meaning that they are after Cale, and the gang must stay one step ahead of the Drejs to
reach the Titan before the Drejs do.
The story may sound predictable, but
the movie is simply enjoyable. It's sci-fic action, high adventure, drama and comedy all
in one. The action and visuals are
simply stunning. There are a lot of good action sequences. My favourite is the chase
through the hydrogen trees at the Gaoul Temple. The plot is good and the characters are
fun. Matt Damon brings ease and charm to the voice of Cale and Drew Barrymore is simply
cool as the voice of kick-butt Akima. Bull Pullman's role as Captain Korso reminds me of
Han Solo, but his ragtag crew of aliens are definitely not Chewbacca and C3P0. Preed, Gune
and Stith (voices of Nathan Lane, John Leguizamo and Janeane Garofalo respectively)
provides the humor and twists in the plot.
This is simply a spectacular
animated film, with cutting edge computer imagery redefining the feature animation and
bringing to life the wonders of the unexplored universe. Two final words; simply awesome! |
