For Winnie The Pooh fans, this
introduction onto the big screen has been a long awaited one. For
over seventeen years, Winnie the Pooh and his motley crew have
only been featured on radio, television, picture books and comics.
But though the name 'Winnie the Pooh' has dominated this series of
stories, each and every one of the characters in this story, set
around the 'Hundred Acre Wood', have a life, colour and character
all their own and they each share an equal piece of pie in the
ongoing adventures of the lovable bear Winnie the Pooh's
adventures.
Bearing that in mind, it is not
unfathomable that one of the liveliest characters, Tigger, insists
that this first ever Movie be named after him instead. No, the
whole movie is not completely centered around Tigger himself,
well, maybe to a certain extent, but there remains a large
envelope of the favorite Winnie the Pooh characters at the centre
of this unfolding, comical drama cartoon.
Winnie the Pooh, the most famous of
this lot is a Pooh bear, always seeking honey and always thinking
of his stomach. This is what makes him as adorable as he is.
Piglet, is of course as the name suggests, a little piglet. The
tiniest of them all he is most prone to accidents, being
accidentally stepped on, whacked to the side and even blown off by
a gust of wind! Then there's Kanga and Roo, a pair of Moma and
baby kangaroos. Little Roo is key to Tiggers' little adventure,
and of course the famous Whoopa - Smoopa whatya'call it - special
bounce is what binds them together and saves their lives in the
end.
Eeyore, a slow and deep throated
donkey is not without his silent humour. Rabbit, or course is the
sensible one who, because of his sensibility seems somewhat
uncaring at times. He is however the smarter one the rest rely on
to get them out of trouble. Finally, there's Owl, the oldest and
wisest of them all. Sometimes his advise is so lengthy, he trails
on and on, losing himself in his speech and of course everyone
he's talking to as well.
Tigger makes his dashing
introduction at the very beginning and reveals as to why the title
is well, named after him! He gets upset a little into the movie as
he begins to realise how lonely he really is, being the only
Tigger in the bunch. With some wise words from Owl, he and Roo set
in search of his entire Tigger family.
Winter suddenly takes a harsh turn
and the group of friends go in search of Tigger fearing the worst.
Through blizzard winds and an avalanche, the friends stick
together and pull through.
It is hard to watch this and not
think of one of Aesop's fables. There is a deep message of
friendship and family and a lesson learned never to look the other
way, when you should be looking at your friends. The very ones
standing right in front of you.
The animation is classic Disney.
All pen and ink on acetate cells. Don't expect any fancy computer
generated Pooh and the rest. None of it, the sky, mountains, snow
etc. have been tampered with by modern machines. There's a little
song and dance to liven things up here and there, though this
isn't entirely a musical. But listen to the words! They ALL speak
a little funny, and that's the humour cleverly woven in to this
little screen gem! |
