Click here for pictures Well, it had to happen sooner or later, Hollywood
has probably been itching to come up with a Gulf War movie for some time now. And that
movie happens to be Three Kings. And the results are not at all disappointing.
Three Kings tells the story of a
group of soldiers, namely Archie Gates (George Clooney), Troy Barlow (Mark Wahlberg),
Chief Elgin (Ice Cube) and Conrad Vig (Spike Jonze) - who are disillusioned with the whole
Gulf War after it ends. This all changes when they chance upon a map showing where Saddam
stashed all the gold he stole from Kuwait. Not wanting to go back to their day jobs after
the war is over, they decide to take one of the bunkers. Their plan ? Out at dawn and back
before lunch. However, as they discover later, things are not as simple as they seem.
Enroute to obtaining the gold, they discover that not all is well even though the war has
ended. At this point in the movie, their agenda changes. I'll leave the rest for you to
find out when you watch the movie yourself.
The movie itself is a mix of comedy, action and drama. Don't
expect any slapstick comedy here, it's mostly the kind of comedy that's makes you chuckle
to yourself. As for action, there's a lot of it - gunfights, car explosions, the works.
And there is one gunfight scene to look out for. They whole thing is in slow-motion. You
have to see it to believe it. Way cool.
What makes the movie stand out from others is the drama element.
The movie shows how the people of Iraq suffered as a result of the war
prisoners in
their own country. And how these soldiers ultimately learn that doing the right thing
isn't always part of the plan.
Acting wise, the cast do a fine job in fleshing out their
characters. George Clooney is convincing as a cynical, sardonic and disillusioned soldier,
Mark Wahlberg as the Army reservist who just wants to go home to his family, Ice Cube as a
soldier who puts complete trust in God and, not forgetting, Spike Jonze as a naïve
Redneck out of his element.
To sum it all up, this movie is a good watch. It's got a good
cast and an interesting story. So go check it out. |
