This
is a movie about tango, of course. The Latin passion, fiery, fast-paced and soulful. It's
about Mario Suarez, who loses himself into the making of the ultimate film about Tango, a
musical. His is a successful career, but his personal life sucks. His wife has just left
him for another man, and the film is the only thing that inspires him to wake up every
morning.
While out scouting for talent at a
bar, Mario is introduced to Angelo Larroca, a gangster who happens to be the financier of
Mario's film. Angelo asks Mario to audition his mistress, Elena, a beautiful young dancer.
Soon, Mario and Elena become entangled in a passionate and dangerous love affair.
Basically sleeping her way through to the top, Elena is soon cast as the lead in Mario's
film.
But the script is rather lacking. I'd say that this movie is a
mere conduit pipe to showcase the fiery Latin American dance. The script is a mere
complementary, not the other way around where the dance is the 'added on' feature.
We see the process of the film; the direction, the producing, and
mostly of the choreography of the dances. It's tango all over the place. It's the national
passion, a proud heritage, and it shows. If you are not a fan of the dance, this movie
will convert you. It is a beautiful dance, but it is more than just a dance, it is their
soul, their life, their very being. Absolutely enchanting! |
