The Story Of Us (eng)
The 'Story of Us' is the very
real and humorous examination of Ben and Katie Jordan's marriage. After 15 years, the
couple is wrestling with the universal paradox: why are the qualities that made them fall
in love in the first place now the very things pulling them apart? Emotionally drained
from their relationship, the Jordans attempt a trial separation while their children are
away at summer camp. For both Ben and Katie, fighting has lately become the condition
rather than the exception, and they believe that their only option is a silent retreat to
neutral corners. During their time apart, both Ben and Katie reflect on the value of their
shared history -- the dance, perfected over time, that has made them an "us."

The
Story Of Us is a comedy\drama about a couple, Ben (Bruce Willis) and Katie Jordan
(Michelle Pfeiffer), who has drifted apart after 15 years of marriage and their attempts
to revive the very element that brought them together in the first place, that is, love.
Somehow, the daily grind of looking after their two children and their work have combined
to make their marriage a boring and loveless one. The question asked here is, "What
happened to US? Where did the love we had for each other go?" And it's one that the
Jordans try to answer as they go through an idyllic vacation in Italy, endless arguments
over the tiniest issues and putting a good face on their marriage for the sake of their
children.
The Story Of Us is directed
by Rob Reiner(A Few Good Men, Misery) who also stars in the movie. It has Bruce Willis,
Academy Award winner Michelle Pfeiffer, Rita Wilson (That Thing You Do, Runaway Bride),
stand-up comedian and producer Paul Reiser, Tim Matheson (She's All that), Colleen
Rennison and Jake Sandvig.
Bruce Willis (Die Hard trilogy, The
Fifth Element, Armageddon, The Sixth Sense, The Whole Nine Yards), in a surprising
departure from his usual tough guy role, plays the role of the unhappy and embittered
husband here. I must say that Willis is a very consummate actor as he carries his role
with perfection and ease. Michelle Pfeiffer (Up Close And Personal, Dangerous Minds) also
plays the part of the tired and harassed wife incredibly well. Well, what else can you
expect from two great veteran actors like them? 'Nough said
The thing is, sometimes during the
course of the story, the atmosphere becomes so heavily filled with anger and other
negative emotions that you just want to turn away. This happens when you see the Jordans
in one of their seemingly endless arguments and when Bruce Willis breaks down and takes
out his anger on his best friends in a public restaurant.
However, the hilarious moments in
the movie provided by Rob Reiner, Rita Wilson and Paul Reiser saves the movie from its
doom as an overly emotionally charged 'heavy' movie. Rob Reiner and Rita Wilson are Stan
and Rachel, the Jordan's best friends who are always giving them their whimsical and funny
philosophical views on married life. Paul Reiser plays Dave, Ben Jordan's book agent who
is always coming up with wisecracks and humorous quips.
The dialog here in The Story Of
Us is superbly well written and delivered and contributes much to the empathy the
movie achieves with the audience. At this point, to tell you the truth, I'm not sure how
else to describe this movie but what I can tell you is that The Story Of Us has a
story (no pun intended) and characters that reaches out and connects decisively with the
audience.
For those of us who have gone
through a divorce (I do not belong in this category, ok!) or had screaming matches with
our spouses over seemingly unimportant issues, I'm sure that we can empathize with the
going-ons in The Story Of Us. For the single crowd or the ones that are happily in
love for each other, The Story Of Us simply highlights the pitfalls awaiting in a
marriage. On the whole, I would rate The Story Of Us as a well scripted movie with
some light moments and lots of emotional baggage exploring a theme which is so often
overlooked by us but one that is very relevant to our lives. |
