Sleepy Hollow (eng)
"Sleepy Hollow," a
suspenseful and sweeping tale is based on Washington Irving's classic tale "The
Legend of Sleepy Hollow". Set in the 18th century, a young New York City constable by
the name of Ichabod Crane comes up with the revolutionary idea of using science to help
solve police investigations. Seen as a potential threat by the establishment, Crane is
sent to the small town of 'Sleepy Hollow' to probe a string of murders, allegedly
committed by a headless horseman. As he begins his investigations, he falls hard for the
beautiful Katrina Van Tassel.

I
would not catergorise "Sleepy Hollow" as a horror thriller, in fact, I would add
comedy to its genre. It is simply excellent, superb, out-of-this-world
ok, ok, I
better stop before somebody gives me a slap. It is creepy and eerily disturbing with
wonderful foreboding cinematography, great visuals and dark humor.
Set in 1799, the talented Johnny
Depp is Ichabod Crane, a New York City inspector who is sent to find out about the murders
in the remote village of Sleepy Hollow, and the Headless Horseman. A man ahead of his
time, Crane takes such a sound scientific approach to the crimes that he would make a 20th
century forensic scientist proud. Using gadgets of his own invention, he researches the
crime scenes and the bodies. Though he carries out his autopsies and experiments with a
practical head, he is certainly most afraid of the unknown, much to our amusement. Johnny
Depp is well cast in this role and carries it superbly.
Cast opposite Depp as his love
interest is Christina Ricci as Katrina van Tassel. Though Ricci is a talent to look out
for, I find that there is no chemistry or spark between her and Depp. The scrip does not
offer her an opportunity to shine forth, and I find her character so 'stiff'. Well yes,
she's supposed to play an cool maiden, but somehow, it just doesn't ring true.
It is still an excellent and
enjoyable movie! Highly recommended, and don't bother buying it from your local corner CD
stall (read: pirate CDs), it does not do justice to the excellent cinematography, amongst
others. |
