Rogue Trader (eng)
Rogue Trader is a romantic thriller about an ordinary guy who simply got out
of his depth. In doing so, he managed to wipe out the 200-year-old Barings Bank, one of
the most august and traditional pillars of the establishment, in a financial disaster
which made headline news around the world. It is the story of a young man in a hurry, who
went too far, too fast.
Starring Ewan McGregor.

Movie review by: Michelle Tan
The movie is based on the auto-biography of Nick Leeson, the famous (though not in the
positive sense) trader of England's Barings Bank. We know or at least heard about him from
the newspapers, and this is a well done movie-story on how he brought the oldest bank in
the world to its 'knees'.It is an insightful movie that
explains and goes to show that no matter how big, or how strong an institution is, it is
still capable of falling apart in a short period of time. This is especially so when there
isn't a proper mechanism of check and balance, and accountability; in other words, nipping
it at the bud.
However, to those who don't particularly enjoy high-finance, then
it may be very confusing, and boring.
The only saving grace is Ewan McGregor, who gives an excellent
performance as Nick Leeson, a man trapped in his mistakes. Try as hard as he does to cover
them up, it just gets out of hand and snowballs into bigger and a much worse situation. We
can really empathize with him, as the movie shows the chain of events that led to the
collapse of the Barings Bank. He is only human, only that he made huge huge cumulative
mistakes. Talk about bad luck! |
