Lt.Adnan is a World War II
action patriotic drama that follows the life of Lt.Adnan bio
set against the backdrop of history. Based on an actual
historic last defence of Bkt Chandu in Singapore during the
Japanese battle to take control of the whole of Malaya by the
British during WWII, director Aziz M. Osman took the liberty
of streamlining the events to make the story more dramatic.
Cast for the movie are Hairee
Othman as Lt Adnan, Umie Aida as Adnan's wife Safiah Fakih,
Farid Amirul as Major Fujiwara, Rusdi Rmali as Private Malik,
Faizal Hussin as Private Ayob and Wahid Senario as Ismail.
Lt. Adnan was successfully
potrayed by Hairiee Othman, a well known actor in the
Malaysian film industry. Lt Adnan's story revolves around his
life, it started out in his early days,as a kampong boy, he
played war games with his friends and accidentally shot a man
with a mock-up gun with an attached sling. Later during the
circumcision ceremony of all the kampong boys, the man who
Adnan shot turned out to be the Kampung's Tok Mudin. However,
the ceremony turns out to be his embarkment into an adult
fueled with the spirit of patriotism. During this time also,
his love life has flourished. Safiah, played by Umie Aida, the
kampung girl, has been attracted to him. During the bathing
ceremony before the 'majlis berkhatan', they switch glances
and acknowledged each other.
In the late 1930's and early
40's, the British has called for the 1st Rejimen of Malay Army
to be set up. Adnan was successful in his attempt to enter
into the Army. With high spirit of patriosim, discipline, and
intergrity, he was quickly admired by his colleague and the
top brass. In particular, his Commanding Officer, in short
period of time he was promoted to a Lt.
He got married with Safiah, and
moved to Port Dickson. They had 2 children, and Safiah was
pregnant with a third children when the war broke out.
Meanwhile, a Malay who wanted to free Malaya, has been
corroborating with a Japanese spy. Played by Sabaruddin Chik,
the character tries to persuade the people to accept the
Japanese who were on the surface, trying to convice the Malays
that the Japanese is helping Malaya to free themselves.
However, when the Japanese landed and took over, it turned out
the Japanese were much worse than the Brits. During these
period, people were skeptical about Malays being able to
defend themselves and to be a free country.
The adventure starts here and
builds up to full throttle when the war started. Lt Adnan was
assigned to the last post before the Jap fully take control of
the whole of Malaya. Initially, the Japenese just sent a
company of troop to clear the area of Bkt Chandu, last line of
defence by the Brits. Lt Adnan and his troop manage to hold
the port. This made the Japenese very angry and sent in a
whole batalion to attack the troop.
We know in the end the Japenese
manage to take control of the whole of Malaya. At the time
that includes Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore. But not
before Lt Adnan and his troop inflicted a lot casualities on
the Japanese Army.
The principal of "berpantang
undur sebelum berjuang" really was emphasized in the
movie. This art direction by Aziz M. Osman, a new generation
director, is creating his own history. Seldom we hear that a
Malay movie costs more than RM2.5 Million and using more than
2000 actors. The story line really focuses on the spirit of
patriotism that should be in the heart of every Malaysian.
Overall, Lt Adnan is a valuable
piece of history in its own and should be viewed by all
Malaysian as a lesson in patriotism.
