Movie review by: Michelle
Click here for pictures The movie opens amidst frenzy on the stock
exchange floor, Hang Seng index points are falling but Daniel Lee (Leslie Cheung) is
confident. After all, he isn't the 'one' for nothing, one for having the magic touch and
'gift' for prediction of the share market. But he was wrong. In just one afternoon, he had
lost everything; the clients' money, the job and a rich girlfriend to boot. This is so ala
Ewan McGregor as Nick Leeson in the 'Rogue Trader.' But this is as far as the similarity
ends.
After having lost everything, he went back to his home, a luxurious boat, and slept
off, only to awake and find a baby next to him, with a note that the mother hoped that
some rich folk would adopt the baby. After a failed attempt to get rid of the baby,
conscience got the better of him and he decided to keep it. Leslie's character seemed so
stuttered in the beginning, but he gradually blends in well with the character after the
first 15 minutes.
Fast-forward to 4 years, and baby is now a street-smart kid. Adored by folks in the
neighbourhood, they help Daniel, now called Wing, to look after the kid. Wing and the kid
both live in a dilapidated shed on the rooftop of a flat. Poor, having only odd-jobs to
support them both, nevertheless, they are happy. The kid may be 4 years old, but he
understands being poor and really loves Wing a lot.
Fate would have it that whilst assisting a neighbour, Lan, to apply for funding for an
old folks' home, met him up with Mrs Leung (Qi Qi), a rich widow, who, believe it or not,
has a phobia of children! Ah, for it seems that the beautiful lass had given up her baby 4
years ago when she was young and desperate, and no prizes here for guessing where her baby
is now. As she slowly overcomes her phobia, she takes a special interest in the kid and
offers to take care of him for Wing.
Qi Qi here seemed to try too hard to play the fragile and filthy rich widowed tai-tai.
No, there is no romance between her and Leslie Cheung, sorry to disappoint you fans. The
focus of the movie here is the relationship between Wing and the kid, and I find it really
beautiful, like when he couldn't afford a toy boat for the kid, he made one out of
glue-ing ice-cream sticks. The kid means the world to him, and he even refused jobs if it
would take him away from the kid. The kid, played by +++ is terrific. He is cute without
having to resort to some smart-alec statements so fondly so in Hollywood productions,
remember the twins in 'Full House'' sitcom?
However, watch for the Lung, a local policeman who patrols the neighbourhood. He has an
eye for Lan but is too afraid to approach her. But he does so via the kid, bringing her
lily bulbs, a pot for the lilies and even fertiliser for the plant! Really cute,
especially when he chides some street children for playing with fire. He found a yo-yo on
one of them and proceeded to show them some yo-yo moves. Hilarious!
This is an alright movie for kids, but they might find it too slow as opposed to the
usual Disney fare. Adults would appreciate it better. The story-line is so-so, but what is
beautiful and touching here is the relationship between Wing and the kid (hence, the
title). Personally, I find the sub-plot of the almost-relationship between Lung and Lan
nice. It is subtle without overwhelming the main characters and hey, it brought some tears
to my eyes. A really nice show!
