Girl, Interrupted (eng)
Susanna Kaysen was
diagnosed with Personality Disorder-and sent to a psychiatric hospital where she spent the
next two years in a ward for teenage girls. There, Susanna loses herself in an OZ-like
nether world of seductive and disturbed young women, and questions the boundaries of
freedom and confinement, friendship and betrayal and madness and sanity at a time when it
seemed the whole world might be going crazy. Ultimately, assisted by the hospital's head
psychiatrist, Dr. Wick, and a no-nonsense ward nurse, Susanna resolves to leave this Oz
and reclaim her life.

This
2-hour long movie brought me into deeper thoughts about life and reality. The movie itself
is based on the real life experiences of Susanna Kaysen, who as a teenager was admitted
into a psychiatric hospital for young women because she was diagnosed with so called
"Borderline Personality Disorder".
As the movie unfolds, one may wonder
if Susanna (Winona Ryder) should really be admitted into a psychiatric hospital as she
isn't really insane though she suffers from a psychological disorder. Maybe it is a
blessing in disguise as she slowly discovers herself with the help of her new-found
friends there. Her friends, unlike her, are slightly more inclined to be mentally
unstable. Together, they go through their daily lives at the hospital.
One of Susanna's new friends is Lisa
(Angelina Jolie), who isn't exactly the most stable of people at times. She becomes the
unofficial ring leader of this motley group of girls. Angelina Jolie is an excellent
supporting actress as she really fits into the role of Lisa who is seductive and dangerous
at the same time. She manages to bring some life into the plot as the pace slows towards
the middle of the movie. As the show draws near to the end, there is a dispute between the
friends and expectedly, this is the beginning of a new life for both Lisa and Susanna.
Also noted is a worthwhile performance by Whoopi Goldberg. She
plays the stern but kind ward nurse, who on occasion, dispenses advice to the girls.
Overall, it is worth watching this movie especially when you need
a break from those sloppy romantic ones. You will see the all-female cast playing
different personalities in the psychiatric hospital, but each bring life to the other's
world. |
