'The Hurricane' tells of
the dramatic story of Rubin 'Hurricane' Carter, an
African-American man who rose above his troubled youth to
become a top contender for the middleweight boxing title.
Denzel Washington does a fantastic and realistic job
playing the character of Rubin 'Hurricane' Carter.
The movie starts with
Hurricane's childhood years, spent growing up in the tough
streets of New Jersey where he had to fight to survive. It
is these years, which develop him mentally, and physically
to become the champion fighter that he was in his later
years. Throughout his youth, Hurricane gets put in and out
of prison non-stop. While in prison, he trains himself to
become a fighter.
One night, Hurricane is
wrongly accused of committing three murders along with
another man. After two all-white juries find him guilty,
he is sentenced to 3 life terms in prison. While in
prison, he alienates himself from the other inmates, and
while doing so, he writes and publishes his autobiography,
'The Sixteenth Round'.
Years later, an
African-American boy name Lesra Martin (Vicellous Reon
Shannon) who lived with his Canadian guardians found
Hurricane's book and gets himself involved in the story of
Hurricane. Together with his Canadian friends Terry
Swinton (John Hannah), Lisa Peters (Deborah Kara Unger)
and Sam Chaiton (Live Schreiber), Lesra fights to get
Hurricane another trial to free him from his wrongful
accusations.
This movie is well done and
is recommended to anyone who enjoys watching touching
dramatic stories about love, courage and the true power of
friendship. Perhaps at times the movie gets a bit slow but
it is generally worth it.
