Galaxy Quest (eng)
Five actors of the classic '70s TV series 'Galaxy Quest' were making appearances at a sci-fiction convention when they were whisked into space by a group of aliens who had mistakenly intercepted television transmissions for "historical documents". They needed the help of "Commander Peter Quincy Taggart" and his crew to help them in their war against a deadly adversary. With no script, no director, and no clue about real interstellar travel, the actors have to turn in the performances of their lives to become the heroes the aliens believe them to be. Starring: Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Tony Shalhoub, Patrick Breen, Enrico Colantoni, Daryl Mitchell

'Galaxy Quest' which starred Tim Allen from the TV comedy series 'Home Improvement', was first touted as a comedy of galactic proportions. Actually, it's a good-natured spoof of the science fiction TV series 'Star Trek' and, surprisingly, it turns out to be pretty good. And you don't necessary have to be a Star Trek fan to enjoy 'Galaxy Quest'.

The movie is directed by Dean Parisot and the script written by David Howard. It stars Tim Allen ('Jungle2Jungle'), Sigourney Weaver ('Dave', 'Copycat', 'Aliens', 'Alien: Resurrection') and Alan Rickman ('Michael Collins', 'Dogma').

In the movie, 'Galaxy Quest' is actually a popular TV series that sounded and looked a lot like 'Star Trek'. But it was cancelled in the end, despite a loyal and fanatical following. What the cast now does is to ride on the waves of its popularity and make a living by appearing as their characters in 'Galaxy Quest' fan conventions.

Jason Nesmith (Tim Allen), enjoys his cult status as Commander Peter Quincy Taggart, but the members of the series, Gwen DeMarco (Sigourney Weaver), Fred Kwan (Tony Shalhoub), and Tommy Webber (Daryl Mitchell) are simply depressed with their downgraded celebrity status. In particular, Alexander Dane (Alan Rickman), who played the alien Dr. Lazarus, really hates his famous tagline. I won't tell you what it is but it sure got us laughing every time he repeated it. It just sounded so corny and cheesy.

Then a group of benign aliens called the Thermians, besieged by an evil all-conquering race of aliens and believing that the Galaxy Quest TV series are factual historical documents, approaches Nesmith for help. And Nesmith and his fellow actors find themselves transported to a spaceship and the wild, zany and crazy ride begins!

There are so many things that are amusing about the movie, it's hard to know where to begin. For one, the obsessed fans, who know more about the show than the stars do themselves, keep asking the stars, who looked really lost, to settle debates about the series.

For another, 'Galaxy Quest' really mirrors 'Star Trek', with Taggart being practically a Captain Kirk clone, and Dr. Lazarus, who is supposed to be Spock. And their spaceship, the NSEA Protector, is almost a replica of the USS Enterprise.

Also, it was delightful to see the fanatical fans wearing the costumes and alien prosthetics, shouting the captain's motto 'Never give up. Never surrender' fervently, and wait for autographs while all the time, the show's celebrities mumble and gripe at each other under their breaths. The special effects, with plasma or laser shootouts in space, plus the monsters and aliens are first-rate. It's almost like watching 'Star Trek', albeit one with a comedic twist.

The acting, especially from Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver and Alan Rickman is outstanding. Tim Allen is his usual sarcastic self with the overblown ego of his Kirk-like character, Commander Peter Quincy Taggart.

And Sigourney Weaver, WOW!! This is her as you have never seen her before, a seemingly dumb blonde who displays ample cleavage and is the romantic interest here. It's totally different from her role as the tough and gritty Ripley in the 'Alien' movie series. Alan Rickman, as the alien Dr. Lazarus with the corny tagline, plays his part to perfection.

The dialogue is masterfully done and 'Galaxy Quest' is a delightful, funny, entertaining, intelligent and inventive parody of 'Star Trek', so much so that it almost stands on its own feet without 'Star Trek' as a background plot. It's wrong to dismiss this as a kiddie movie because I am sure that everyone, regardless of age, will enjoy this wonderful comedy that boldly goes where no other 'Star Trek' spoof has gone before.
