Ok, your first thought would be "Not again, another teen romance movie…". However, after seeing it, I've to say, well, it did started out as a teen movie but somewhere along the way, it diverted into something more meaningful than usual.

'Down to You' is directed and written by Kris Isacsson. It stars Freddie Prinze Jr ('Boys and Girls', 'Wing Commander', 'She's All That'), Julia Stiles (10 Things I Hate About You), Selma Blair (Cruel Intentions), Shawn Hatosy (Outside Providence), Zak Orth (Snow Falling on Cedars) and Henry Winkler (The Waterboy).

The story starts with Al (Freddie Prinze Jr.), a college guy who wants to be a chef. One night, he meets Imogen (Julia Stiles) at a bar and the two instantly hit it off. This is where it really deviates from the norm of many hormone-driven teenage movies. Al and Imogen actually go out together for a few months, talking and getting to know each other better before they reached the stage of having sexual relations. And at this point, they are so madly in love that they really seem destined for each other. Then, Imogen had to go away on a long holiday abroad and this is where things started to break down.

The story here is interesting enough, not least because we actually get to watch them finish college and move into careers of their own, unlike other teen movies where the story usually finishes while they're still in school. We get to see them fall madly in love, and fall out of love after one too many petty quarrels about seemingly small issues. Then we see them meet up later in life when both of them have graduated and are more matured.

Kudos to director Kris Isacsson for managing to pull all the stages of the characters' lives together into one seamless film. Freddie Prinze Jr. is his usual wholesome adorable self and Julia Stiles really carries the role of Imogen well. But the supporting cast here fails to do a job of adding colour and spark to the film, with perhaps the exception of Selma Blair who acts as the hot and sexually provocative Cyrus, an M.I.T. drop-out turned porn star who has a crush on Al.

Shawn Hatosy is barely memorable as Eddie Hicks, who's forever getting rejected by women and Zak Orth isn't much better as Monk Jablonski, Al's best friend who's an arrogant porn actor. Even veteran actor Henry Winkler fails to shine here as Chef Ray Connelly, Al's father. Overall, despite the draggy dialogue, poorly developed characters and other small but glaring problems, 'Down to You' is still a good date movie, especially for teens and young-at-heart.
