Click here for pictures Here is an old-fashioned comedy that works,
thanks to adorable performances by Chris O'Donnell as swinging bachelor Jimmie Shannon and
Renee Zellweger as his sweetheart, Anne. When Jimmie's eccentric grandfather (Peter
Ustinov) dies and leaves his entire estate to Jimmie - provided that Jimmy marry no later
than 6:05 p.m. on his thirtieth birthday (which occurs in 24 hours)--you'd think that the
two lovebirds could quickly and happily tie the knot. But Jimmie, a freedom-loving guy in
no hurry to be tied down, had previously messed up. When he had first proposed to Anne, he
made clear by his body language and unromantic vernacular as well that he was not really
ready for the big step. She could tell he didn't really want to get married. The tip-off
was the way he sat the ring on the table and said, "You win."
Now with money his incentive, Jimmie is eager to get hitched. Thinking that Anne is out
of the country, he sets out on a mission to find a bride. One by one, he approaches his
ex-girlfriends, and one by one, they rejected him. Watch out for Brooke Shields here,
absolutely ravishing as Buckley. Buckley is a poised debutante perfectly willing to marry
in an instant - until she discovers that she will have to live under the same roof as her
husband for ten years and have at least one kid with him.
My other favourite character here is Jimmie's best friend Marco (Artie Lange), who
takes out an ad for Jimmie, which resulted in Jimmie being chased by a thousand aspiring
brides through the streets of San Francisco. Absolutely hilarious!
Renee Zellweger plays a ditzy Anne who's willing the give Jimmy a second chance, but
even $100 million wouldn't get her to marry him when he himself isn't ready.
But as all romantic movies goes, this one does have a happy ending. A nice, enjoyable,
romantic comedy. Thoroughly recommended.
